Why Your Airbnb Photos Are Costing You Bookings (and How to Fix It)

With more listings appearing across Yorkshire every month, the first battle is not price or reviews. It is getting the guest to stop scrolling and click. That decision is made almost entirely on your photos, in about two seconds. Here is why photography is your highest-leverage fix, and how to get it right.

The two-second scroll

Picture how guests actually search. They enter dates and a location, and Airbnb returns a grid of properties, each represented by a single cover photo and a price. The guest scrolls fast, and only clicks the handful that catch the eye.

Everything else about your listing, the description, the reviews, the amenities, is invisible until someone clicks. If your cover photo does not earn that click, none of the rest gets seen. In a market with more competition, a weak photo set is no longer a minor issue. It is the difference between a full calendar and an empty one.

The metric this drives is click-through rate: the share of people who see your listing and click it. Higher click-through leads to more bookings, and the platform rewards listings that convert with better placement. Photos sit at the very top of that chain.

What is quietly costing you clicks

The most common problems are not exotic. They are ordinary and fixable:

  • A weak cover photo. Leading with a bathroom, a dark bedroom or an exterior on a grey day, instead of your single most impressive space.

  • Poor light. Photos taken with lights off and curtains half closed, so rooms look small and gloomy.

  • Phone snaps. Wonky angles, cluttered surfaces and low resolution that read as amateur next to professionally shot competitors.

  • No sense of story. A random pile of images with no order, so the guest cannot picture the stay.

  • Missing the selling points. No shot of the view, the garden, the log burner or whatever actually makes the property special.

Each of these costs clicks, and clicks are bookings.

How to fix it

You do not need to be a photographer to know what good looks like. Aim for this:

  1. Lead with your hero shot. Choose the single most impressive image as your cover, usually a bright, wide, welcoming main living space or a standout feature like a view or a striking kitchen.

  2. Shoot in good light. Every light on, curtains open, ideally on a bright day. Bright rooms look bigger and more inviting. This one change transforms most listings.

  3. Declutter and stage. Clear surfaces, made beds, fresh towels, a few warm touches. Style the space the way you want guests to imagine using it.

  4. Sequence the set like a tour. Order the photos the way someone would walk through the property: arrive, living space, kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom, outside, local highlights. Tell a story.

  5. Capture the details that sell. The view, the hot tub, the fireplace, the coffee corner, the garden at golden hour. Specifics create desire in a way that generic room shots do not.

  6. Go wide, but honest. Wide angles show a space well, but never distort it into something guests will feel misled by on arrival, because that comes straight back in your reviews.

Photography and the wider picture

Strong photography does not work in isolation. It gets the click. Your pricing then has to justify it, and your reviews have to back it up. But photography comes first in the sequence, because nothing else matters until someone clicks. In a rising-supply market, as we cover in our guide on Yorkshire occupancy in 2026, it is often the single biggest differentiator between two otherwise similar properties.

The before-and-after effect

Owners are consistently surprised by how much a professional reshoot moves the numbers. The same property, same location, same price, with a strong hero image, good light and a proper photo sequence, can lift click-through sharply. More clicks feed more bookings, which feed better ranking and reviews, which compound. It is one of the fastest, most durable improvements you can make to a listing.

We handle this for you

Professional photography is part of how we bring a property to market. It is one of the areas we care about most, because it sets the ceiling on everything that follows. Great photos let us price with confidence and win the click before a competitor does.

If your current photos were taken on a phone or are more than a couple of years old, they are almost certainly costing you bookings. Book a 15-minute call and we will tell you honestly whether a reshoot would pay for itself.
